"It
must be considered that there is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more
doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle than to initiate a new order
of things."
Machiavelli
The Merriam-Webster
Dictionary defines change as follows: to make different in some particular way;
to undergo a modification; or to undergo transformation, transition, or
substitution.
Initiating a new order of things is merely the first step. Change is not a
discrete event, which once initiated, can be finished. It is a continuous
process always evolving and moving toward something different. Cultural change
is, perhaps, the most important responsibility of management.
Business, education, nonprofit organizations and even governmental organizations
have recognized that success and competitiveness constantly require new
approaches. As each new focus energizes an enterprise, it helps improve the
bottom line and the productivity of that organization. Each new focus also
requires that roles, responsibilities, and working relationships be adjusted and
renegotiated.
Team leaders are
responsible to help their organizations adapt to changes and recognize the stage
in which certain behaviors occur. Individuals who
are motivated to change and understand their environments are able to set aside
their past experience if a new model can be more effective. Team leaders
must adapt to changes, but not in an authoritarian fashion. Team members must be
given the proper conditions and environment that allow risk taking and sharing
of experiences.
